  • Pantone's 2017 Color of the Year is Greenery

Pantone, the international authority on color, color systems and the leading technology company for accurate communication of color, has named "Greenery" as its 2017 Color of the Year. Here are some products you can find at Modern Planet that will give you a very green 2017.

Danish lighting manufacturer Louis Poulsen is now producing a mini version of the iconic Panthella Lamp by Verner Panton. The desktop lamps come in a range of bright colors drawn from Panton's work, including this glossy green, straight out of the 1970s. Pantone's color pick for next year is a "tangy yellow-green" shade often seen in foliage – technically called Pantone 15-0343, variations of the shade have already started to crop up in all sorts of well designed products.

Emeco's aluminum Nine-O Stacking Chairs come in a collection of armchairs, counter stools and swivel options. Lots of fun colors to chose from. Pantone said the choice was made in response to a "stressful and tense world. Bringing forth a refreshing take, Greenery is a tangy yellow-green that speaks to our need to explore, experiment and reinvent. Illustrative of flourishing foliage, the fertile attributes of Greenery signals one to take a deep breath, oxygenate and reinvigorate."

The Vitra Eames Elephant is available in a plastic version for those it was originally intended for: children. Whether as a toy or as an item for children’'s bedrooms, this friendly-looking animal with its distinctive, huge floppy ears should make the heart of many a child (and parent) beat just that little bit faster. The Pantone Color Institute advises the fashion, product, interiors and packaging design industries on the use of color in design. It has been choosing a Color of the Year since 1999. For 2016, Pantone picked two soft colors – a baby blue and dusty pink.

Similar to the choice of Greenery, previous Colors of the Year have tended towards the bolder end of the spectrum, with the brownish-red Marsala color for 2015 and Radiant Orchid for 2014.

Isamu Noguchi's predilection for sculptural lines are present in his Freeform Sofa and Ottoman, the shapes of which are reminiscent of river pebbles. Noguchi himself described his design as "soft rock". Thanks to its organic shape and the natural tones of its upholstery fabric the sofa has a light, elegant feel in shades of Greenery. It certainly looks like Verner Panton had a lot of fun in his lifetime, 1926-1998. He was an inspirational and colorful personality. A unique person with a special sense of color, shape, and light. Born in Denmark and trained as an architect, Panton worked at Arne Jacobsen’s architectural practice, setting up his own design studio in 1955. Verner Panton started by designing lamps for Louis Poulsen. The first lamp to be put into production was the Topan lamp in 1959, followed by the Moon Lamp. Verner Panton went on to design colorful seating systems, tables, rugs, and wall sculptures.

Several of Verner Panton's designs are available through Vitra.

Together with Vitra, Panton came up with the first prototypes for this molded one-piece chair in the 1960s and the Panton Chair went into series production as of 1967. Unlike the cheaper Panton Chair Standard in solid plastic, Panton Chair Classic is made of rigid expanded plastic and has a lacquered surface. The original and radical spirit of the 1960s continued to shape Panton's work to the end of his life. Encouraged by the revival of the '60s in the 1990s, Panton believed that imagination would once again enter the furniture design world. It seems imagination and fantasy is in full flower these days, unfortunately Panton is no longer here to witness this current period of design experimentation.
