  • Vitra's Miniatures - A Collector's Collection

Twenty years ago the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein, Germany, began making miniature replicas of the great milestones in furniture design. Vitra's Miniatures Collection summarizes the history of industrial furniture design – moving from the historic, to the art nouveau movement, to Bauhaus’ radical design, all the way up until the present day – the collection has grown to include more than 65 pieces.

logo-vitra-miniatures_1 Vitra's Miniature chairs were created as a way of making the Vitra Collection more available to the public – not just through two-dimensional means, but through the tactile pleasure of meticulously handcrafted, three-dimensional models.

rood_blauwe_stoel The chairs are one sixth of the size of the originals. They are all true to scale and replicate the originals right down to the smallest details in construction, material and color. Here is Vitra's Miniature Rietveld Red Blue Chair, c.1923.

Here is the original chair shown along side some Piet Mondriaan paintings, c 1917. Here is the full size original Red Blue Chair shown along side some Piet Mondriaan paintings, c.1917.

Vitra's Miniature Chairs are licensed reproductions that have been produced using the same specifications and materials as the originals. Collecting these (while still not an inexpensive endeavor), affords one the pleasure of owning exact replicas of their favorite pieces at a lower price and much smaller scale.

Whether used as a dining chair or side chair, the Scoop Chair Collection is all about comfort. It is generously proportioned and its scooped shape is designed to hold the sitter in a comforting embrace. The soft form of Scoop is achieved by applying upholstery to an injection‑molded hard foam shell. The copper‑plated steel legs create an unusually decorative pedestal for the sculptural form.

The Pylon Collection of furniture, inspired by bridges, towers and space frames, combines a hand welded copper‑plated steel rod base and a smoked glass top. These pieces are semi‑transparent and lightweight yet also form a structurally strong functional sculpture.
