Gebruder T 1819

The unique success story of the German furniture design company, Gebrüder T 1819, began with the work of master carpenter Michael Thonet, who lived from 1796 to 1871. Michael Thonet succeeded in making the transition from manual furniture production to industrial production in 1859 with Chair No. 14, later called the Vienna Coffee House Chair. Using the then innovative technique of bending solid beech wood they began producing the now iconic bentwood furniture we all recognize today. The individual production steps were standardized and the chair was easy to disassemble and could be shipped in a space-saving way. Chair No. 14 cleared the way to international success and numerous bentwood designs followed.

In the 1930s a major expansion took place with the addition of tubular steel furniture from famous Bauhaus-associated designers such as Mart Stam, Marcel Breuer, and Mies van der Rohe. Today these early tubular steel furniture designs are considered milestones in design history. Their clear, open and simple forms were an expression of a new attitude in everyday culture and architecture. Numerous successful classic models are still in the product line, among them the first cantilever chair, S 33, designed by Mart Stam, as well as models S 32 and S 64 designed by Marcel Breuer.

Today, all bentwood and tubular steel classics as well as the contemporary collections are produced in Germany in a facility with cutting- edge production equipment and a staff of workers with vast experience to draw upon. Gebrüder T 1819 develops innovative products that stand out due to the high quality of materials, timeless formal language and always take sustainability and durability into consideration.
