Warren Platner
Warren Platner for Knoll
Warren Platner studied architecture at Cornell University, graduating in 1941. He worked with Raymond Loewy, Eero Saarinen, and I.M. Pei before opening his own practice. His architectural work includes the Georg Jensen Design Center and the Windows on the World restaurant at the World Trade Center in New York.
The Platner Collection, introduced by Knoll in 1966, is the work for which he is most recognized. Each chair requires more than a hundred cylindrical steel rods welded to curved frames with over a thousand welds per piece. Platner formulated the production techniques himself. The rods create a surface that changes in visual density depending on the viewing angle. The collection includes lounge chairs, arm chairs, stools, and tables at coffee, side, and dining heights.
