Aarnio was - and still is - one of the pioneers in using plastic in industrial design. Plastic material set the designers free to create every shape and use every color they wanted. This gave birth to objects oscillating between function and fun - but always fascinating ones.
The finnish designer Eero Aarnio, born in 1932, studied from 1954 to 1957 at the Institute of Industrial Arts in Helsinki and started in 1962 with his own office as an interior and industrial designer. Aarnio's designs were an important aspect of 1960s popular culture, and could often be seen as part of sets in period science-fiction films
Because his designs used very simple geometric forms, they were ideal for such productions. Eero Aarnio continues to create new designs, including toys and furniture for children. Artek was founded in 1935 to "sell furniture and to promote a modern culture of habitation by exhibitions and other educational means." Alvar and Aino Aalto, Maire Gullichsen, and Nils-Gustav Hahl were inspired by the Bauhaus functionalism, simplicity, and the harmony between form and function.
