Herman Miller introduced the Eames Shell Chair in 1950 — one of the first chairs made from a single sheet of molded fiberglass. The shell has since been produced in polypropylene and has been in continuous production for over 70 years.

What makes the family so large is that one shell form works across many bases. The Eiffel wire base tilts the shell slightly rearward. The dowel base reads as furniture rather than technology. The rocker base (RAR) changes the character of the chair entirely. The same shell also mounts to a stacking base, a task base, and a stool pedestal — and a low lounge version sits closer to the floor for living spaces.

Upholstery ranges from unupholstered to a contoured seat pad to fully upholstered — the latter using a soft, padded shell with a smooth underside. Shell colours run to dozens of options, including saturated shades like Bikini, Mustard, and Poppy alongside the classics.

ModernPlanet carries Herman Miller. The Eames Shell Chair ships nationwide across the US. Contact us for assistance with base and colour selection.
