Description

An exclusive and rare design from Vilhelm Lauritzen, the Radiohus Sofa was designed for Denmark’s Radio House – today the Royal Danish Academy of Music – in 1936. A pioneering piece of Nordic Functionalism, the elegant design shunned the conservative and straight lines of the time in favour of a more futuristic expression. Beautiful from all angles, its curved lines and open construction welcome and embrace the sitter, while the quilted back highlights the exactness of its design. A piece of furniture that requires space, let it stand freely in a room.

Vilhelm Lauritzen

1894 - 1984

Vilhelm Theodor Lauritzen was one of Denmark’s most important architects of his time and became one of the fathers of Danish Modernism. Today, many of his projects remain as lasting examples of what was then a new and revolutionary architecture in which form follows function. He studied butterflies with great enthusiasm, but he was first and foremost an architect and maintained through his career that architecture should be an applied art that serves all – not just the few and the privileged. Among Vilhelm Lauritzen’s most famous and acclaimed works are Copenhagen Airport’s first terminal (1939), which is today known as the Vilhelm Lauritzen Terminal, the Radiohuset broadcasting building in Frederiksberg (1945), Vega – Folkets Hus cultural centre in Copenhagen (1956) and the Danish Embassy in Washington, D.C. (1960).

Vilhelm Lauritzen was born on 10 September 1894 in the town of Slagelse, Denmark. He graduated high school from Sorø Akademi in 1912 and from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts’ School of Architecture in Copenhagen in 1921. The following year, he founded Tegnestuen Vilhelm Lauritzen (today Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects). Lauritzen’s Modernist talent also included interior design, where he created everything from door handles, ashtrays and railings to lamps, sofas, and chairs. The pendant lamps he designed for Radiohuset in the late 1930s were reissued by Louis Poulsen as the VL 45 Radiohus Pendant and remain in production today.
