Details

Carl Hansen & Søn is reintroducing its CH23 chair - one of the five pieces of furniture designed by Hans J. Wegner exclusively for Carl Hansen & Søn in 1950

The CH23 dining chair is an early example of Hans J. Wegner's unique style and insightful craftsmanship, and contains many well-known Wegner details - for example, the elegantly shaped cruciform caps on the backrest and the special double-woven seat.

Wegner was a master in making complex designs appear simple, and despite the CH23 chair's richness in unique detail, its appearance is ultimately light and simple.

The chair has no armrests, which makes it practical for fitting around the table, even in small rooms. Thanks to its ingenious design and organic form, it is also unsurpassed for comfort.

MATERIALS:

  • CH23 is made of solid wood with a form-pressed veneer back with an organic shape.
  • The chair is available in solid oak and walnut as well as in a combination of these woods with various finishes.
  • The seat is available in natural or black paper cord.

MEASUREMENTS:

  • Width: 19.8 inch / 50.3 cm
  • Depth: 19.8 inch / 50.3 cm
  • Height: 30.9 inch / 78.6 cm
  • Seat Height: 17.5 inch / 44.5 cm

HELPFUL NOTES:

  • Oak has a clearly visible wood structure when painted. Oak is available only in black (NCS S9000-N), the cover cap on this model only comes in black.
  • Oak/walnut is a mixed version combined with a frame in oak and backrest in walnut.
  • Please note on oak chairs with a soap treatment, the cover cap only comes in oak.

Passionate craftsmanship means many things to different people. To Carl Hansen it means everything. It has been so ever since 1908 when Carl Hansen founded his company on a strong belief: outstanding craftsmanship and rational serial production could go hand-in-hand to provide customers with high-quality furniture at a reasonable price. Today they continue to build on this simple but strong idea, combining traditional woodworking techniques with the latest technology to produce furniture of lasting value.

"A chair is to have no backside. It should be beautiful from all sides and angles." – Hans J. Wegner

With his love of natural materials and his deep understanding of the need for furniture to be functional as well as beautiful, Hans J. Wegner made mid-century Danish design popular on an international scale. He began his career as a cabinetmaker in 1931 and subsequently entered the Copenhagen School of Arts & Crafts. After receiving his architectural degree in 1938, he worked as a designer in Arne Jacobsen and Erik Møller’s architectural office before establishing his own office in 1943.

Over the years, he designed over 500 chairs with many different wood types and styles. He became the undisputed master of Danish chair design. His style is based on clean, simple lines and to Wegner a chair was an artwork as much as a functional object. One of his well-known philosophies was that a chair should be beautiful from every angle and that it should not have a backside. Though Wegner designed for series production, all of his work bears the stamp of the traditionally trained craftsman. Wegner’s most famous chairs are the Wishbone, the Wing, the Elbow and the Shell. Most of his designs are produced by Carl Hansen and are still in production today.
