Maarten Van Severen
Belgium, 1956 - 2005
Maarten Van Severen was born in 1956 in Antwerp, Belgium and studied architecture in Ghent, Belgium. He designed his first furniture pieces in 1986 and in the following year established an independent workshop, where he pursued the semi-industrial production of his own furniture designs. This unified process of design and production was a fundamental aspect of his work. He devoted himself to the examination of basic furniture types: chair, table, chaise lounge, shelving, and cabinet. He developed primary solutions for these categories based on a comprehensive exploration of the questions of form, material and construction.
Beginning in 1990, Severen began to collaborate closely with the Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas and also turned his attention to interior design tasks. The beginning of his collaboration with Vitra in 1996 marked a new phase in his career. It offered him the opportunity to work with new materials and also brought a much wider degree of exposure and influence.
Until his death in 2005 in Ghent, Maarten Van Severen developed a range of new designs for Vitra, which have progressively entered series production.

Vitra is a Swiss company dedicated to improving the quality of homes, offices, and interior public spaces through the compelling power of design. Their chairs, tables, and accessories, including clocks, toolboxes, and cushions, are developed with an intensive, modern design process. Fusing engineering excellence with the creative genius of leading-edge international designers, Vitra enhances the aesthetic and emotional aspects of every space they grace.
All Vitra products are functional, inspiring, and durable. Founded in 1950, the family-owned Vitra line is designed and created by internationally recognized contemporary designers such as Verner Panton, Isamu Noguchi, Eero Saarinen, and Jasper Morrison. “We make products that avoid the superfluous and last for a very long time,” says Vitra chairman Rolf Fehlbaum.
