Piero Lissoni

Italy, 1956

Born in Italy, Piero Lissoni is a well-known designer and architect with a degree from the Polytechnico of Milan. In 1986 Lissoni founded the Studio Lissoni. Lissoni has worked with design brands such as Boffi, Cassina, Kartell, Living Divani and Flos on a wide diversity of designs of furniture and lighting. Lissoni’s projects are often full-scale interiors and architecture of hotels, offices and showrooms, yachts and private homes. He is inspired by many different elements but also designers such as Arne Jacobsen.

Piero Lissoni’s design principle is never to design for a specific function or purpose, but to design for human beings. His designs for Alessi include the very minimal Birillo Collection of objects. In 2004 Knoll introduced Lissoni’s Divina Lounge Collection, originally designed for his longtime client, Living Divina. It features clean lines and exceptional comfort and appears to float in mid-air, with razor-thin legs supporting the chrome-plated steel frame.

Knoll has lived their guiding principle, "good design is good business," since 1938. Products are all created to inspire, fit, and last. The Bauhaus philosophy that furniture should complement, not compete with architecture, is central to Knoll’s design. Its extensive portfolio includes office work systems, residential mid-century modern classics, textiles, and accessories.

Designers like Harry Bertoia, Eero Saarinen, Warren Platner, Isamu Noguchi, and Florence Knoll contributed to Knoll’s iconic designs. Knoll invests in research and field studies and explores organizational behavior and technology to ensure quality excellence. As a leader in sustainability, Knoll’s practices reduce waste and conserve resources. Based in Pennsylvania, Knoll has a strong international presence, and 40 products are in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
